Citizenship by investment (CBI) versus residency by investment (RBI): what actually differs?
CBI (Citizenship by Investment) is a programme that grants citizenship to eligible investors — you receive a passport and full citizenship rights, usually within 6–18 months. RBI (Residency by Investment) grants residence rights (golden visa/long-term visa); citizenship is a longer path after many years of residence.
When CBI fits
- You need to strengthen your passport quickly.
- You want full citizenship that can be passed on to your children.
- You prioritise shorter processing times over lower cost.
When RBI fits
- You want a foothold in a country or bloc (e.g. the EU) at a lower cost.
- You are prepared to live there and work towards citizenship over time.
- You care more about the living environment, education and tax than about an immediate passport.
The right choice depends on your tax objectives, mobility needs and family plans — which is where comparative data across countries becomes important.
